The Crittall Windows journey began in 1849, when Frances Berrington Crittall arrived in Braintree, Essex, and bought Bank Street ironmongery. After Frances died, the business was briefly taken over by his son Richard, before being passed to his second son, Francis Henry Crittall, in 1884.
Francis Henry Crittall’s contributions to the business were invaluable. Seeing the potential in steel, Crittall began manufacturing innovative steel windows that allowed for slimmer frames. Crittall helped to pioneer the concept of steel windows, so much so that the name “Crittall” has become synonymous with this style of window.
Contact UsAs well as being a pioneer, Francis Henry Crittall was also known for fairness and philanthropy. He paid his workforce well and prioritised good working conditions, installing both heating and electric lighting in the factory.
Crittall was also known for his philanthropy – he funded the development of Silver End, a model village in Essex, to provide good quality housing and amenities for his employees when the town of Braintree could no longer support the expanding Crittall Windows’ workforce.
