MD of Crittall Windows, Russell Ager, shared this thoughts on the recent UK election result:
“Following the results of the general election, I’m pleased to see a commitment from Labour to boost house building and increase spending on infrastructure for schools and hospitals.
“While building new homes will create some fantastic opportunities for the construction industry, that are long overdue, the increased investment in infrastructure will require funding which causes a few concerns. I believe that if this leads to a rise in taxes, it could negatively impact consumer demand as they continue to battle increased living costs. Although inflation has fallen significantly, compared to two summers ago, prices are still rising but at a slower rate.
“Higher taxes may also have a ripple effect on businesses operating within the construction sector. For instance, these increased costs may prevent companies from exploring and investing in new technologies and staff training, stifling business growth and development. “It’s fantastic the government has made a commitment to projects and investments, but funders, homeowners and companies need to feel confident that the market can remain stable. This is hugely important because without it the government will fail to get the buy-in from the public.
“After several turbulent years, people from across the country want to see steady growth, low interest rates and low inflation. Let’s hope a new government brings some positive changes for the construction industry as well as the wider economy.”
