Bespoke windows for Jonnie Walker Edinburgh

Mention the term ‘Crittall’  to anyone in the know, and they’ll immediately tell you about a steel-framed window or door that helped to define what is now known as early 20th century ‘industrial design’ – a style that has only increased in popularity as the years have rolled by.

A Crittall-manufactured window or door is a hallmark – and a trademark –  of impeccable taste combined with a discerning eye for architectural excellence and durability. Among many iconic and famous buildings, our windows can be found in the National Gallery, the Public Records Office and the Houses of Parliament.

This look has, however, spawned hundreds of imitators who have labelled their products ‘Crittall-style’ or ‘Crittall-type’. Let’s be very clear: Crittall is NOT a style or type, it is a brand name for our iconic steel windows  and doors. Other manufacturers of metal doors and windows are jumping on a bandwagon by coining a phrase which should not be used. Many such companies actually use aluminium instead of steel, making their products vastly inferior to ours. Products manufactured by Crittall offer quality and craftsmanship that simply can’t be beaten by alternative window materials, which is why so many architects turn to us when they’re planning a new build or refurbishment project.

Like many iconic brands, we’re highly protective of the Crittall name which is why we fiercely protect the trademark, taking legal action against imitators incorrectly using our name to promote their own products.

Buyers can rest assured knowing that when they choose us, they are getting iconic Crittall windows built to our own exacting standards.

The story of our own distinctive aesthetic began in an Essex ironmongery shop in the mid-1800s, and when Francis Henry Crittall took over from his father in 1884, he made a decision that would set the firm on the path to fame. Instead of traditional timber, he would make window frames from steel. It was a simple shift that would lead to a revolution in window and door design. The company’s innovative approach to steel fabrication soon caught the attention of architects and builders, setting the stage for the development of our iconic brand.

Steel frames: The backbone of our design

Our use of steel frames marked a significant departure from traditional wooden windows and doors. The strength and durability of steel allowed for thinner frames, larger glass panels and improved structural integrity. This innovative approach quickly gained popularity in both residential and commercial buildings, particularly after the design ‘heaviness’ of the Victorian era. Our windows represented a breath of fresh air – literally and metaphorically.

Embracing industrial chic

Our steel windows didn’t evolve with the hope they would become iconic. They were simply an innovative, technology-led solution to the age-old problem of trying to get as much light as possible into buildings, particularly commercial ones where more light meant more efficient working hours. Many years later, when old industrial warehouses and lofts began to be converted into residential proprieties, their new tenants embraced the urban feel of such buildings and kept original features, including our windows. This resurgence in popularity introduced our aesthetic to a new generation of design enthusiasts.

The modern age

Although Crittall’s products are timeless, we do not sit on our laurels. Over the years we’ve embraced changing tastes and technological progress to make sure we remain in pole market position. For example, the introduction of double glazing and improved weatherproofing has enhanced the performance of our products without compromising their elegant appearance. This commitment to innovation ensures that our windows and doors remain a practical choice for contemporary buildings.
